Information for Visitors to FTPI


Welcome to the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota!
We are glad to have you participating in our visitor program! General information, office procedures, and most commonly asked questions are addressed below. Please feel free to ask our staff any other questions you may have about FTPI or the Twin Cities area during your stay. We hope you have a productive and enjoyable visit here.

Transportation
The University of Minnesota is served by the Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport (MSP). There is light rail transit, shuttle and taxi service from the airport to hotels on campus. Campus is generally about 25 minutes from the airport. 

Light rail is available to and from both MSP terminals through Metro Transit. Transportation is as low as $1.75 for a one-way ticket. Directions for getting to the light rail transit from the airport are available HERE.

Directions to the WEST BANK (West Bank Office Building)

From the airport take the METRO Blue line to the Government Plaza station for the BEST WESTERN Plus The Normandy Inn and Suites

OR


From the airport take the METRO Blue line to the US BANK station and transfer to the METRO Green line (opposite platform)and get off at the West Bank Station for The Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown.

 

Directions to the EAST BANK (Physics and Nanotechnology Building)

From the airport take the METRO Blue line to the US Bank station and transfer to the METRO Green line (opposite platform)and get off at the East Bank Station for The Commons Hotel and Stadium Village Station for The Days Inn Hotel on University.

Shuttle service, SuperShuttle, is available on the ground transportation level of the airport. The cost of a one-way trip is $20 and $40 for round-trip. *Reservations for the return trip to the airport must be made 24 hours in advance of travel by calling 1-800-BLUE-VAN (258-3826).*

Taxi service is also available. Travel from/to the airport to campus hotels by taxi is approximately $50.To catch a taxi at the airport follow signs to the Ground Transportation Center one level below baggage claim.

Car rental is not necessary or even practical because parking is limited and expensive; light rail, buses and shuttles are readily available.

Lodging
Short-term visitors are generally housed at either the BEST WESTERN PLUS The Normandy Inn and Suites or The Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown, a short walk (Courtyard) or shuttle (Best Western Plus - please arrange at check in with concierge) from the West Bank Office Building where FTPI is located. Long-term visitors are placed in better-equipped accommodations for a longer stay. Detailed information will be sent to you by our staff upon confirmation of your visit.

Information regarding the location of the West Bank Office Building and the University of Minnesota are avaliable HERE. The West Bank Office Building is located on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus.

Information regarding the location of the Physics and Nanotechnology Building and the University of Minnesota are available HERE. PAN is located on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus.

Computer Access
Linux work stations are readily available in our offices and we have both secure and unsecured wireless access for laptop computers.  Please let us know your requirements in advance of your visit so we may make the appropriate arrangements.

Visa
If you require a visa for your visit to FTPI we are happy to help with arrangements. Please contact our staff to get stared.

Seminar Speakers
If you are a visiting speaker, please send us your talk title at least one week prior to your arrival so it can be included in the calendar and announcements. In the seminar room there is an LCD projector which can be used. Please bring the necessary cords for connecting your Mac laptop.
